Visitor Management System

A paper visitor logbook records that somebody wrote a name down. It does not record who actually walked in.

Handwriting is unreadable, entries are skipped when the lobby is busy, and nothing stops a person writing any name at all. For a workplace that needs to know who was on site and when, the logbook is a record of intent rather than a record of entry. Attendance tracking built on the same sheet inherits every one of those weaknesses.

Replacing it means authenticating people at the door, which is where the engineering gets awkward. Two authentication methods were in scope, and they behave nothing alike. Face recognition produces a probabilistic match from a biometric pipeline. An NFC card produces a deterministic ID from a hardware reader over a serial interface. One is a confidence score, the other is a byte string.

Build a separate path for each and you end up with two attendance systems that disagree. The application layer had to treat both as the same kind of thing.
