A thesis is dense by design. Months of work compressed into a document written for two examiners, in a format nobody reads voluntarily.
The defence makes that worse rather than better. Slides flatten a system into bullet points, and the parts that took longest to get right are exactly the parts a static deck cannot show. An examiner reading "real-time monitoring over MQTT" has to take it on trust; there is no way to poke at it from a projector screen.
The other problem is afterwards. Once the defence ends, the work becomes a PDF in a repository. Anyone curious later gets the document, which is the least readable artifact of the entire project.
A pixel-art styled site built with Next.js and Tailwind CSS, presenting the thesis as something explorable rather than a linear document.
Explorable instead of sequential. A reader follows the part they care about rather than sitting through a fixed order. Examiners and casual visitors want different depths, and a page can serve both without compromise.
Pixel-art as a deliberate signal. The aesthetic is not decoration for its own sake. A retro interface makes an academic document look approachable, which lowers the barrier to actually reading it. Dense technical work does not have to look forbidding.
Next.js because it outlives the defence. A statically served site remains readable indefinitely at a URL that can be shared, unlike a slide deck that only makes sense with someone narrating it.
Written to be understood without narration. The deck it replaced needed a presenter standing next to it. This does not.
The thesis became something people could explore before the defence and read afterwards, at a URL rather than as an attachment.
A small project that picked the format making the work legible to whoever needs it, rather than the one the process expects by default.
